Mission Statement

The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering attained college status in 1988. The original School of Engineering was established in 1984, which marked the start of a period of extraordinary development and growth. The name of Howard R. Hughes first became associated with engineering at the university in 1985 in honor of the creative and innovative engineering achievements of the late Mr. Hughes. The facilities of the college have been expanded and significantly enhanced by the completion of the magnificent Thomas T. Beam Engineering Complex early in 1989. The college is engaged in a continuing program to recruit outstanding faculty and to develop and maintain modern, well equipped laboratories in keeping with the teaching, research, and service mission of the college.

The resolution of real world engineering problems requires a combination of practical and empirical knowledge together with a thorough understand of mathematical and scientific fundamentals and principles.

The complexity of today's problems mandates a multidisciplinary approach in which the revolutionary advancements in applied science and technology are tempered by the social, economic, and political implications of proposed solutions. Increasingly, solutions of these problems requires considerable dependence upon computer systems. The objectives of the college are to provide students with an adequate foundation to solve problems in a wide range of assignments, to stay abreast of rapidly changing technology, and to help them recognize their responsibilities to society.
