Pre-Engineering/Computer Science Programs

All freshmen and transfer students admitted to the college are automatically placed in one of the six pre-programs in the college depending on the interest expressed by the student in a given major.

CEGPRE
     Civil and Environmental Engineering
COEPRE
     Computer Engineering
CSCPRE
     Computer Science
EEGPRE
     Electrical Engineering
MEGPRE
     Mechanical Engineering
ECSPRE
     undecided

Students in the pre-programs are expected to study English, mathematics, and chemistry to qualify as full-fledged majors in engineering or computer science. In order to become a full-fledged major in one of the computer science programs, a student must have credit or be enrolled in MAT 181 (Calculus I) and ENG 101 (Composition I). In order to become a full-fledged major in one of the engineering programs, a student must have credit or be enrolled in MAT 181, (Calculus I), ENG 101 (Composition I), and CHE 115 (General Chemistry I). Entering students demonstrate their readiness to take these courses on the basis of a placement exam in chemistry and on ACT or SAT scores for English and mathematics. Students who do not satisfy prerequisites may do so by taking MAT 126, 127 or 128, ENG A, or CHE 103. The Department of Chemistry administers the placement exam and assigns students to the most appropriate course. Entering students should refer to the class schedule for the upcoming semester for the dates, times, and locations of the placement exams. The class schedule also includes qualifying ACT and SAT scores for appropriate placement in English and mathematics courses.

Transfer students from other Nevada institutions should obtain a copy of the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN) Course Transfer Guide to determine course equivalences between that institution and UNLV. Transfer student must be aware that even though the Admissions Office accepts courses for transfer credit, each department evaluates courses for content and level prior to acceptance towards a degree in any major. Students may be asked to provide catalog descriptions, textbooks, course outlines, or other documentation for courses they want evaluated for credit. Transfer student who do not have the prerequisites for MAT 181, ENG 101, and CHE 115 will be required to take placement exams provide ACT/SAT scores.

All students must be aware that courses such as ENG A, CHE 103, MAT 126, MAT 127, and MAT 128 are not applicable toward degree programs in an engineering discipline.

International students are required to take the placement test in English as a Second Language (ESL) and accept enrollment in the appropriate ENG or ESL courses recommended by the Director of the English Language Center.
STUDENT-SPEAKS:

"Given the growth and large number of engineeirng projects within the Las Vegas Region, many professors have not only taught a strong theoretical background, but also tied their lesson plans into local real world problems. The real world applications have been invaluable to me and my education at UNLV."
